About the project
For KRONOSPAN, KRONTAB has developed a complex low-voltage distribution system designed to supply power to the installations and equipment involved in the industrial process.
The solution is based on a 3,200 A low-voltage main switchboard, configured with two 3,200 A power supplies and a 3,200 A coupling, incorporating functions for automatic source transfer, measurement, monitoring and control.
The electrical infrastructure is complemented by 10 secondary switchboards, designed to supply power to machinery and technical areas, as well as by two automatic reactive power compensation batteries, each with a capacity of 800 kVAr, with a total installed capacity of 1,600 kVAr.
The entire system is built using ABB switchgear, with the solution configured for power distribution, uninterrupted power supply, system monitoring and optimisation of energy efficiency.
Benefits:
Built around the requirements of each project.
Control over the entire manufacturing process.
Equipment and systems from established manufacturers.
Every switchboard is inspected and tested before delivery.
Reliability designed for long-term operation.
Supplier of Equipment Used
Implemented solution
The Low-Voltage Main Switchboard is the main point of distribution of electricity to the installations and consumers it serves.
The TEG is configured with two independent 3,200 A power supplies and a 3,200 A busbar, an architecture that offers flexibility in distribution management and the ability to switch between the two power sources.
The three main circuit breakers – Power Supply 1, Power Supply 2 and Coupling – are integrated into a configuration designed to ensure controlled management of power sources and to minimise interruptions to the power supply to consumers.
The modular design and functional layout of the circuits facilitate operation, testing and maintenance in an industrial plant characterised by high power ratings and the need for high availability.
The integrated ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) system automatically manages the configuration of the power sources and the transfer switch, depending on their availability and status.
By continuously monitoring the power sources, the system enables the automatic control of the main circuit breakers and the execution of transfer sequences, thereby reducing the time required to take action in the event that one of the power supplies becomes unavailable.
The integration of the ATS into the TEG helps to improve power supply continuity and operational safety, which are important factors in an industrial process where unplanned outages can affect equipment availability and production continuity.
To optimise the power system, two automatic reactive power compensation banks were installed, each with a capacity of 800 kVAr, resulting in a total compensation capacity of 1,600 kVAr.
The systems carry out automatic step-by-step compensation, adjusting the reactive power supplied in line with load variations and the installation’s requirements.
By maintaining an appropriate power factor, batteries help to reduce the flow of reactive power, minimise losses in the system and make more efficient use of the electrical infrastructure’s capacity.
The total capacity of 1,600 kVAr highlights the industrial nature and high power output of the facility it serves.
The main distribution board is supplemented by 10 secondary switchboards, designed to supply power to various machines, equipment and technical areas.
The switchboards are configured according to the power and characteristics of the loads they serve, incorporating the necessary equipment for distribution, protection and control.
Separating the distribution system into dedicated panels allows for the functional organisation of consumers, enables any faults to be located more quickly, and facilitates work on a specific area without unnecessarily disrupting the entire installation.
The ABB equipment and the clear layout of the circuits contribute to operational safety and facilitate inspection and maintenance work.
